Reporting to the Content Marketing Manager and Ophthalmology Communications Director, the Communications Specialist is a Jack/Jill of all trades who can write compelling content for multiple audiences (patients, faculty, physicians, donors, industry, etc.) across both digital and print platforms.

 

The Communications Specialist will contribute to departmental newsletters, develop and update website copy, write physician and researcher profiles, prepare remarks and PowerPoint presentations, and provide writing support for Harvard Ophthalmology events.  Some administrative tasks (about 10%) are also required.

 

Experience with web content development is required. The ideal candidate will be familiar with web best practices and have some experience using a content management system (such as WordPress, OpenScholar, SiteCore). This position requires a driven, team-oriented individual with proven writing and communications skills, who is able to adapt quickly to shifting priorities.  A substantial degree of creativity and autonomy is expected.

Requirements:

  • B.A. or B.S. Degree in Communications, Marketing, or Journalism
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in communications writing (digital and print)
  • Excellent grasp of the written word and able to adjust writing style for the desired impact
  • Experience writing long-and short-form copy across all media, particularly for digital media
  • Ability to translate scientific text for various audiences
  • Experience in desktop publishing, such as Adobe InDesign
  • Experience with content management systems, such as Wordpress, OpenScholar, SiteCore
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including PowerPoint),
  • Ability to prioritize projects to meet deadlines
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities, as needed
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Professional demeanor and ability to work with highly confidential information are fundamental
  • A substantial degree of creativity and independence is expected

Preferred Skills:

  • Interest or background in healthcare, academic medicine, or science highly desirable
  • Experience with Constant Contact and social media a plus
